This article is a port and update from my previous Alt+Games site . I'll post these in our new site once in a while as I return to the games I've covered earlier. Depths of Peril seems to be doing well and the game has been ported to Mac since my last article about it so I'll republish the original text with only minor updates.
Depths of Peril is a single player computer rpg game for Windows and Mac machines developed by Soldak Entertainment. The players takes on the role of a clan chief and tries to war and intrique his way to be the sole leader of the city Jorvik. Depths of Peril is an interesting mixture of an isometric action role-playing game in the Diablo vein and inter-clan diplomacy reminiscent of the Civilization franchise. The game is available for both Windows and Mac. There's a free demo, the full game costs $19.99 and there's 30 days' money back quarantee.
Technorati Profile
The game's visual offerings are nice, but a bit too colorful to my tastes.
The short playtest sessions were inadequate to cover all aspects of DoP as the game really has a lot to offer. In addition to the monster bashing, questing and leveling up of an ordinary CRPG, the player can recruit warriors to his clan, trade with other clans and even try to pillage their homesteads (and of course, try to protect his own stead from such activities) and so on. The game's pace felt hectic, especially at first: just as I would get on my way to perform one of the time-limited quests, the quest expired. Due to the game's multi-faceted nature I would have needed a better tutorial to get a grip of things: the present one does indeed touch all of the subjects but as they are all explained before you really get a hang of things I had to ignore most of the advanced information on that time and rely on getting back to those topics later. Maybe a tutorial which would only explain the most basic controls and mechanics at the start of the game and would touch the advanced topics only after the player had played some (maybe combined with a starting level that would accommodate this progression) could be more valuable to the starting player.
An interesting acquintance nonetheless. There's a demo available on the game's website, check it out!
