After spending most of the weekend playing Guitar Hero III on Wii, one question crossed my mind: Could you use the Guitar Hero controller with the Flash Games for the Wii Browser?
Wiicade has already developed the Wiimote API that allows using all of Wiimote's buttons, up to 4 Wiimotes and even some functions of the Nunchuk controller in Wii Flash applications. It should be possible to track the guitar controllers controls too, as they are bound to be similar to the Nunchuk's.
However, neither Nintendo nor Opera have documented the workings
of the Nunchuk so it seems that the Wiicade people have reverse
engineered its functionality. They have worked out the C and Z buttons, but the stick remains still a mystery.
Still, I would see this as an interesting possibilityfor Octane (the developers of Guitar Hero). Freeware Flash games for the controller could possibly create more interest in the Wii Guitar Controllers (in any case they couldn't hurt) as well as providing more stuff to play for their current customers. And who knows, maybe the most innovative stuff could spark some ideas for Guitar Hero IV or some other Octane game?
For indie developers this could be a boon, too. How often do you get to work with such an interesting haptic control device (ok, the wiimote is that too, but a guitar...)? Granted the obvious gameplay ideas have been tapped by Octane but I think there's still lot to pursue and explore there.
This may be something not likely happening in the near future due to technical difficulties and the lack of published APIs. Still, it would be great if it would happen some day...
